Ironing Boards: An Essential Home Tool for Keeping Clothes Crisp

There are a few main types of ironing tables to choose from. Each has its own advantages depending on your needs and space.

Types of Ironing Boards
There are a few main types of ironing tables to choose from. Each has its own advantages depending on your needs and space.

Flip-Top Ironing Boards
Flip-top ironing tables are the most compact option. They fold up when not in use for easy stowage. Most flip-top boards have foam or plastic tops that are lightweight and adjustable for various heights. While convenient for small spaces, their lightweight construction can mean less stability while ironing intricate items.

Folding Ironing Boards
Folding ironing tables have a sturdier build than flip-tops with wood or metal frames. They fold in half vertically for storage but take up more room than flip-top models folded flat. The tradeoff is greater stability, especially for heavier irons or detailed ironing tasks. Many folding irons have fabric coverings on their tops rather than bare wood/metal for protection.

Freestanding Ironing Boards
Freestanding “Ironing Boards do not fold or collapse, giving them the most solid structure. That makes them best for continuous or heavy-duty ironing. However, they also require permanent floor space, so freestanding boards are generally best for dedicated laundry rooms rather than multi-purpose rooms with limited square footage. They can still be stored upright and out of the way against a wall when not in use.

Choosing the Right Ironing Board Height
It's important to choose an ironing table at the correct height to prevent strain and fatigue. As a general rule:

- For average height individuals, aim for a board height between 33-36 inches. This aligns the ironing surface near waist level to encourage proper posture.

- Taller individuals may prefer a height of 37 inches or higher for comfort.

- Shorter users should look for boards adjustable down to 30-32 inches.

Always test the height before ironing to ensure your arms remain relaxed at your sides with elbows bent at 90 degrees. Adjustable boards offer the most flexibility for different users.
