Blades - A Mobile-Centric Spin-Off of the Elder Scrolls Series

The Elder Scrolls Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that takes place in the fictional world of Tamriel. This persistent MMORPG offers a vast world to explore and a large amount of content, but the experience can be hard to master.

Blades is a mobile-centric spin-off of the Elder Scrolls series. It is a misguided attempt by Bethesda to cash in on the growing popularity of free-to-play mobile games.

Its focus is on town building, dungeon delving and combat. You play as a member of the Blades, an elite faction from previous Elder Scrolls games, who's returned to their hometown to help rebuild it after it's destroyed.

The dungeons themselves are a bit of an exercise in futility, with enemies that largely don’t drop loot, making it hard to level up quickly. You’ll find a few chests that you can open, but they have a cost to open that increases with the rarity of the item.

Crafting

While fans will likely recognise many elements of The Elder Scrolls from Blades, there are plenty of differences between the mobile title and the main TES games on consoles. It's a much lighter and more structured version of the franchise, with an emphasis on short incursions into procedurally-generated dungeons rather than an open world you can explore at your leisure.

Combat is also a bit different. You'll still swing your weapon and raise your shield with your finger, but there are some new wrinkles that are more suited to the mobile format.

There's no doubt that the gameplay in blades is incredibly beautiful, but it doesn't feel like the Elder Scrolls you know and love. There's plenty of character development, some good story elements and a great setting for the game, but the overall experience isn't the same as you'll find in any other entry in the series.
